The world has already accepted renewable energy (especially solar) as future mainstream energy instead of fossil fuels. And now global energy moves show an interesting pattern that highlights global intent of utilizing the solar energy through engineering innovation.
To make a positive change in the energy scenario, the world really needs more focus on rapid solarisation. And floating solar is a successful attempt to achieve that purpose.
The Inception and Potential
The first floating solar plant was installed in Korea on Geumgwang reservoir in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province in 2014. The plant had a 465 kW energy generation capacity and consisted of 1,600 solar modules. The inception brought insight on the benefits of such installations. And in 2015, Japan announced the installation of then largest floating solar plant, comprising of 9,000 solar panels. However, within 2016, a much bigger installation of floating solar plant (consisting of 23,000 panels) was inaugurated on Thames, capable of producing 6.3 MW energy.

Incredible growth of Indian solar industry has made the country a major solar player, estimated to become the third biggest solar market worldwide by FY 17-18. India has shown a remarkable performance in the growth of the solar sector and has received global acclamation in the same. Be it setting up of the International Solar Alliance with France or playing a pivotal role during the negotiations at COP 21 at Paris, the Indian government is leading the global fight against climate change. India had taken a very calculated decision to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix. Under the National Action Plan for Climate Change, a target of 20 GW of solar installations was announced in the year 2010 which was later revamped to 100 GW of solar and 75GW of other renewable energy sources by the year 2022. From less than 10 MW by the FY 2010, the country has seen an impressive growth to achieve a cumulative growth of 10 GW by the FY 2017.

It is important to mention that Indian rooftop solar capacity has crossed 1 GW milestone, indicating near about 113 per cent growth in 2016 over 2015.
